Antidepressants consumption increasing at an alarming rate

Some warning signs that can indicate a mental disorder like stress or anxiety can be a significant decline in the professional or academic performance, having irrational fears, having suicidal thoughts, being unable to manage routine tasks, withdrawing from social interactions, changes in eating or sleeping habits, getting thoughts of self-harm to state a few. Whenever any such symptoms are seen in anyone, he should visit a doctor or a psychologist as soon as possible.

A doctor may suggest some stress medication or counsel the patient to relieve him from stress. If the anxiety attacks are minor, a good counseling session can be of great help but if the acuteness of the disease has increased considerably, it becomes inevitable to take medicines. These drugs do not have many acute side effects but there may be some long term side effects according to some psychologists. Thus, it is better to consider other options before gulping anti depressants. The prescribers have also become fast at suggesting the use of these medicines. Both the consumers and the prescribers should be more knowledgeable about these drugs before using or suggesting them.

The main reason according to recent studies that has resulted in an increased consumption of stress medication has found to be the unwillingness of such patients to visit doctors. Many people suffering from depression and anxiety don’t feel comfortable in visiting a doctor, thus, they decide to gulp these medicines on their own. As a result they are not able to quit the use of these drugs even if they are willing to do so. These drugs are addictive in nature and cause unpleasant effects if stopped after consuming them for a long time. These are being consumed for the same purpose for which activities like smoking and alcohol consumption were done in earlier times.
